Editor's note

Welcome to the first ever issue of Wazito Monthly. We started with lofty ambitions of creating a worthwhile magazine that would provide an inside view of what Wazito Football Club is all about. With the Wazito brand fast gaining traction in the Kenyan football landscape in terms of fan base and online engagement, we felt that the time was right to produce a new magazine dedicated to capturing the best Wazito FC content.

Wazito Monthly? Allow me to explain. Wazito emanates from a Swahili word, ‘Uzito’, which translates to ‘weight’ or ’density’ in English. Metaphorically, it means something which is above its peers. We aim to be the best football club magazine in Kenya, which would be unlike anything that has ever been tried before. This pilot issue marks the beginning of a long and noble journey. The magazine will be monthly. Belt up and enjoy the ride as we aim to get bigger and better. Don’t forget to provide us with your feedback.

Our staff writers and content creation team are excited to launch this first issue, featuring an in-depth cover story of Wazito Captain Bernard Ochieng, who reflects on his footballing career from the dusty fields in Ahero to playing in the 2019 AFCON edition.

We trace back Wazito Football Club’s ascent from the humblest of beginnings at the University of Nairobi Main Campus grounds to a formidable force in the Kenya Premier League and the most professionally run football club in Kenya.

We catch up with Fidel Origa, the inaugural winner of Wazito Player of the Month in December. He describes how he has quickly settled at Wazito FC and producing the best displays in his burgeoning football career so far.

In an exclusive interview, Dennis Gicheru talks us through the two worlds of being a footballer and CEO at Wazito Football Club. Delving into fandom, we learn what attracted Bernard Mamati to start supporting the Wazito since its inception and why he’s christened fan 001.

Meanwhile, Sekou Dore, former captain and Wazito legend names his best 11 comprising of past and present Wazito players together with a coach and substitutes that he would trust to take to a football battle.

Flip through and enjoy the issue.
